Taylor’s All-Around Effort Lifts Paul Quinn Past Tougaloo, 54-50
DALLAS — Cierra Taylor turned in an outstanding two-way performance to lead Paul Quinn College to a 54-50 win over Tougaloo (Miss.) on Saturday afternoon at the Health and Wellness Center.
Taylor finished with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, dished out five assists and recorded a game-high seven steals to pace the Tigers (7-3, 3-0). Her relentless perimeter defense disrupted Tougaloo's offense throughout and proved decisive in the closing minutes as Paul Quinn secured its third straight conference victory.
Aiyana Sams matched Taylor with 11 points, adding two steals, while Canai McPherson provided a spark off the bench with nine points, three assists and six steals. Zaire Brown contributed six points and five rebounds in a physical interior battle.
Paul Quinn built a slim 9-7 lead after the first quarter and stretched the advantage to 27-21 at halftime. The Tigers controlled the third period, outscoring Tougaloo 19-13 to take a 46-34 cushion into the final quarter. Tougaloo cut the deficit to four in the final minutes, but Paul Quinn converted key free throws and forced late turnovers to hold on.
Shalayne Morgan led Tougaloo (2-6, 1-3) with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting and added three assists, eight steals and two blocks. Brayland Ferguson posted a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Chrystance Walters added eight points for the Bulldogs.
Paul Quinn shot 31.7 percent from the field (19 of 60), went 5 of 18 from 3-point range and converted 11 of 12 free throws (91.7 percent). Tougaloo shot 30.5 percent overall and finished 11 of 13 at the free-throw line.
With the win, the Tigers remain unbeaten in conference play and continue to build momentum heading into the heart of their league schedule.
