McCallum’s Double-Double Lifts Paul Quinn Past Rust, 56-49
DALLAS — Isaiah McCallum delivered an outstanding all-around performance to lead Paul Quinn to a 56-49 victory over Rust (Miss.) on Monday night in Dallas.
McCallum posted a double-double with a team-high 13 points and 12 rebounds to anchor Paul Quinn (4-7, 0-3). He added two assists, a steal and a block, controlling the paint on both ends as the Tigers secured the nonconference win.
Paul Quinn jumped out quickly, building a 34-21 halftime lead behind strong interior play and defensive pressure that limited Rust to 25 percent shooting in the first half. Rust trimmed the margin to single digits in the second half, but the Tigers' rebounding edge and timely stops preserved the victory.
Mekhi Johnson added 12 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks in a strong two-way effort for Paul Quinn. John Harrison finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, while T.J. Mitchell contributed 11 points and three assists off the bench. Cameron McMurray chipped in four points and 10 rebounds.
Rust (3-8, 1-2) was led by Chaunterion Ward and Kory Young with 11 points apiece. Tykeidriel Moore added 10 points off the bench. Despite forcing 15 Paul Quinn turnovers, Rust shot just 23.5 percent from the field (16 of 68) and 23.5 percent from 3-point range (8 of 34).
Paul Quinn shot 37.5 percent from the floor (21 of 56) and outrebounded Rust 52-39. The Tigers held Rust to 21 points in the first half, setting the tone defensively for the rest of the night.
Paul Quinn will look to build on the win as it continues its season slate later this week.
