DILLARD EDGES PAUL QUINN IN OVERTIME, 64–56
NEW ORLEANS — Despite a late push from Paul Quinn College, Dillard University held firm in overtime to secure a 64–56 win Thursday night at Dent Hall.
Paul Quinn (1–5, 0–1) erased a four-point halftime deficit and forced overtime after outscoring Dillard 29–25 in the second half. But the Tigers struggled offensively in the extra period, managing only three points while the Bleu Devils (6–2, 2–0) closed out the game with an 11-3 advantage.
Dillard forward Devin Lewis powered the home team with a game-high 22 points and 16 rebounds, shooting 10-for-23 from the field in 42 minutes. DaCarter Coleman added 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while John Kelly III scored 11 points and matched Paul Quinn's Mekhi Johnson with a game-high nine rebounds.
Paul Quinn was led by Johnson, who posted six points, nine rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes. Taurean Mitchell and Isaiah McCallum each scored nine points, while Malcolm King added nine off the bench on 4-of-7 shooting.
The Tigers shot 35.6% from the field, improving to 50% in the second half but stumbling in overtime. Free throws proved costly as Paul Quinn finished just 9-for-26 (34.6%). Dillard didn't fare much better at the line (7-for-16), but its 51–38 rebounding advantage and 22 second-chance points proved decisive.
Dillard led 28–24 at halftime behind a strong defensive effort, holding Paul Quinn to 27.6% shooting in the first period. The Tigers answered after the break with improved ball movement and paint touches but committed 17 turnovers overall, which the Bleu Devils converted into key scoring opportunities.
In overtime, Lewis and Coleman combined for crucial buckets as Dillard controlled the glass and held Paul Quinn without a field goal until the final minute.
Dillard continues conference play looking to extend its early-season momentum, while Paul Quinn seeks to regain footing after its fifth loss of the season.
